What is the importance of sugar in wine making?

Question: What is the importance of sugar in wine making?

Home brew kits seem to be sugar water and yeast to make the alcohol and then some kind of fruit juice for flavouring. If you add less sugar do you just get less alcohol? Are there certain fruits/ vegetables with a high natural sugar level where you don't need to add lots of extra sugar?

Sugar feeds the yeast , without sugar the yeast won't grow and the fermentation process won't happen and all you will have is really bad tasting grape juice :) Your other 2 question...no and no

Without sugar you can't ferment, therefore no alcohol, the kits often contain concentrated juice and need the extra sugar. GRAPES fully ripened won't need additional sugar!
